Understanding Depression
Depression is not just discontent.
Depression is not a weakness of character or a temporary bad mood. If you suffer from depression, you may notice it is easier to recall negative events and more difficult to bring to mind positive ones.
When you are clinically depressed, your thinking process does not work to your advantage.
Instead, your view of yourself, others, and the world grows progressively more adverse and you struggle to free yourself from negative thinking, much like someone stuck in quicksand. The more you try to help yourself by reasoning, the deeper into the sand you sink. So how do you get out of the quicksand? You have two choices: remain motionless or find the tools that will help you escape.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach that will provide you the tools to escape the hopeless and helpless states which depression creates.
Clinical depression, also called major depressive disorder, is caused by several factors. These include genetic predisposition, life stress, personality traits and brain chemistry. Some typical symptoms of depression include:
Persistent sadness or emptiness
Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
Changes in appetite (increase or decrease)
Low energy and fatigue
Difficulties with sleep (insomnia or oversleeping)
Cognitive difficulties such as concentrating, remembering, and making decisions
In more severe cases, thoughts of death or suicide

Our Approach to Depression Treatment
Evidence-Based Methods
Despite some opinions, people cannot "snap out" of depression, because this illness robs a person of their ability to enjoy life. At South Hills Counseling, we utilize evidence-based approaches that have been proven effective in treating depression. Our primary treatment modality is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a short-term, goal-oriented therapy treatment that has shown to be highly effective in treating depression.
During therapy, you'll gain awareness of your symptoms and learn various practical techniques to challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors. This process allows you to feel empowered and more in control of your life, leading to improved mood, increased pleasure, and greater self-confidence.
Comprehensive Treatment Approach
Our depression treatment goes beyond simply addressing symptoms to help you:
Identify and challenge the negative thought patterns maintaining your depression
Reconnect with activities and relationships that bring meaning and joy
Develop coping strategies for difficult emotions and situations
Understand the unique factors contributing to your depression
Build a personalized relapse prevention plan
Integrate new skills into your daily life for lasting change
Frequently Asked Questions
-
While everyone experiences sadness or low mood at times, clinical depression is characterized by persistent symptoms (lasting at least two weeks) that significantly impact your daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life. If you're experiencing ongoing sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, or feelings of worthlessness, it may be more than temporary sadness. During your initial consultation, we'll help determine if depression treatment would be beneficial for you.
-
While medication can be helpful for many people with depression, it's not always necessary. For mild to moderate depression, therapy alone can often produce significant improvement. For more severe depression, a combination of therapy and medication may be most effective. We focus on evidence-based therapeutic approaches and can collaborate with your primary care physician or psychiatrist if medication becomes part of your treatment plan.
-
The duration of treatment varies based on the severity of your depression, how long you've been experiencing symptoms, and your personal goals. Many clients begin to see improvement within 8-12 sessions of CBT, though some benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly assess your progress and adjust our approach accordingly. Remember that recovery from depression is a process, and each person's timeline is unique.
-
Depression can be recurrent for some people, but effective treatment significantly reduces this risk. Part of our treatment approach includes developing relapse prevention strategies and helping you recognize early warning signs. Many clients find that the skills learned in therapy provide lasting tools for managing future mood challenges, even years after completing treatment.
-
Supporting someone with depression involves listening without judgment, encouraging them to seek professional help, and being patient with their recovery process. Avoid phrases like "cheer up" or "snap out of it," as these can minimize their experience. Instead, express your care and willingness to help in practical ways. During treatment, we can provide guidance on how family members can best support their loved one's healing journey.
