    What is Art Therapy?

While traditional psychotherapy has many benefits, the concept of art therapy has proven to be successful in various ways that differ from traditional therapy practice. The practice of art therapy sets itself apart as a means of therapy by utilizing the creative process of art making to explore one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a way that can feel less threatening. Through integrative methods, art therapy engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone.

Art therapy sessions are facilitated by a professional art therapist. Art therapy can be used to improve cognitive and sensory-motor functions, explore emotions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, relieve stress, improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and cope with a physical illness or disability. There is no right or wrong, nor judgment of artistic abilities, creativity, or aesthetics while exploring this therapeutic process. Art therapy also provides an opportunity to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of art making.

Who Can Benefit from Art Therapy?

Art therapy may be a good fit for anyone who may be struggling with verbalizing their thoughts and feelings or who may be seeking an alternative way to be able to express themselves and foster self-awareness. Art therapy can assist those who may be more resistant to traditional talk therapy with feeling heard.

Art therapy can be especially beneficial to children and adolescents who may be less capable and/or comfortable expressing themselves via words. However, art therapy is not just for children. It can be beneficial for individuals of any age with their journey towards healing and self-discovery.
